Mini Server Headless Setup, Another Version
These tiny servers with light power requirements are likely going to get stuck into inconspicuous locations with no display screen, keyboard, or mouse - a "headless" install in server admin speak.
For this example:
Mini1 is a an apple Mini Server received late October 2009.
pb3 is an early model Macbook Pro
Mini1
- Plug it into power.
- Turn it on.
- Connect an ethernet cable.
pb3
- Plug into ethernet.
- Insert the Snow Leopard Server DVD.
- Double-click the ServerAdministrationSofware.pkg icon.
- Follow the prompts to install the software on pb3 that will remotely setup and administer the mini1 server.
The installation package installs several apps in a "Server" folder within the Applications folder on pb3. The Server Assistant.app is not installed in that folder. It is installed in System->Library->CoreServices. Server Assistant is absolutely required as the starting point for a headless install.
- Browse to System->Library->CoreServices->Server Assistant.app and launch it.
- It should autodiscover the new server and continue the setup from there.
- This server was named mini1.local. It was set up as an intranet server behind a firewall.
- When the server is setup, then Server Admin and Server Preferences in the Applications->Server folder may be used for additional configuration of mini1.local.a
That is all.
A few notes for future reference.
*Do not use Server Admin until the Server Assistant has completed. It may be used to discover the ip address of the server if server assistant has problems with autodiscovery. In that case, launch Server Admin, make note of the ip address of the server, and use the ip address when prompted by Server Assistant during the Add Server dialog.
**In Server Admin, it is possible to login as root using the password that ships with the system. That will appear to work for setup until trying to enter the software license number. Error returned at that point is "invalid license". The license number must be entered from Server Assistant setup to be accepted.
Visual
mini1 installed in emergency shelter which doubles as a "server closet". Some day I will take the entire system "off grid" to test runtime of the whole system using only the APC battery pack.
