Setup
The Mini Server arrives with Snow Leopard Server pre-installed, ready to setup.
If attaching your own keyboard, mouse, and display, a wizard style format walks a new user through server setup, step by step. Other than the two things below, nothing more to add. For embedded systems or if you do not want to attach peripherals, see the notes re "Headless Setup".
Two things to keep in mind when setting up Snow Leopard Server on the Mini Server..
- Setting it up as a user workstation, and setting it up as a server are two almost entirely distinct activities. Typically neither one difficult. But they are distinctly separate. In a dual use scenario, setup the the mini first as a server which is the default out-of-the-box setup wizard. Then go back and set it up just like any other Mac for the user who will log in locally. Double-check to be certain the local user settings will not power down the system during a period of inactivity.
- Use a non standard TLD for DNS if setting it up for a home system behind a firewalled router. TLD - Top Level Domain, DNS-Domain Name Server. TLD's are the letters after the "dot". .com, .net .org, .edu these are standard TLD's. Rather than using a standard TLD, or even .local or .private, try using something descriptive that the machine will not try to resolve any other way. .house, .family, .office .fun. This advice seems trivial, and is, until the first time you do not use it and spend half a day troubleshooting DNS problems.
Re-installation
Scroll to the bottom for any needed help with re-installation. Don't go out and buy an external firewire optical drive just to support the mini server without reading below. Apple makes it easy to share optical drives for machines that ship without them!

Time Machine, and Time Machine, on Snow Leopard Server
There are two time machine setups to perform on the mini server.
Mini Server Headless Setup, Another Version
These tiny servers with light power requirements are likely going to get stuck into inconspicuous locations with no display screen, keyboard, or mouse - a "headless" install in server admin speak.
For this example:
Mini1 is a an apple Mini Server received late October 2009.
pb3 is an early model Macbook Pro
Troubleshooting DNS and Fully Qualified Domain Name, FQDN
In house intranet, using a fully qualified domain name ending in .net. The name would normally resolve out on the WWW because of the .net Top Level Domain, TLD.
Re-install Snow Leopard Server on the Mini
This assumes the availability of a screen sharing connection to the mini. If cannot get to screen sharing, firewire to another Mac is an option.
Re-install Snow Leopard Server on Mini via Firewire
If you have a Mac with a optical drive and firewire, no need to go out and buy an external firewire drive to support the mini server.
Mini Server Headless Setup
Step by step, with pictures. Headless means no user interface input or output devices attached. No keyboard, mouse, or monitor in other words.

Re-installing Snow Leopard Server Headless on Mac Mini Server for Podcast Producer
Reason for re-install.
After a day and a half of trying to get kerberos authentication working with Podcast Producer on a running server, it was time to give up, or try a last ditch effort.
This server has a dozen services running, and has been through many configuration changes since initial setup. The folks at podcastproducer.org promise that Podcast Producer will work. They recommend starting from a clean minimalist install of of Snow Leopard Server. Decided to test that theory as the last resort.
