Re-install Snow Leopard Server on Mini via Firewire

If you have a Mac with a optical drive and firewire, no need to go out and buy an external firewire drive to support the mini server.

If your mini server is so helpless it can no longer do screen sharing and you aren't up to ssh, firewire and Apple optical drive sharing technology to the rescue.

  • Plug a firewire cable into the mini server and into the Mac that has an optical drive and firewire.
  • Restart the client machine in target disk mode, (hold down T on keyboard while starting), with the Snow Leopard Server Install DVD inserted.
  • The firewire connected target machine automatically becomes an external DVD reader for the mini.
  • It really is just that simple with newer Macs.

Keep in mind if purchasing the required cable new:

  • Firewire 800 is the hole on the mini server.
  • Newer macbook pro's ship with firewire 800 hole.
  • Older Macbook Pro's shipped with a firewire 400 hole.
